Achieving Work/Life Balance

Saturday, May 5; 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Pre-registration is required.

Please register by May 1.. Cost: $35 per person.

In this 3-hour workshop you will understand the difference between what's important and what's urgent and how to schedule your priorities rather than prioritizing your schedule.

Active Parenting (for parents of children age 5 - 12)

Saturdays, May 26 - June 23; 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Pre-registration is required.

6 weeks. Please register by May 22. Cost: $75 per person or $130 per couple (plus $20 for workbook)

 In this interactive 10-hour program you will learn these skills: communicating effectively, responsibility and discipline, encouraging self-esteem, redirecting misbehaviour, sidestepping power struggles, and conflict resolution.

Active Parenting for Stepfamilies

Thursdays, April 12 - May 24; 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Please register by April 5th

6 weeks, 2 hours each session. Cost: $75 per person or $130 per couple (plus $20 for workbook)

This 12-hour program is an interactive learning experience.   

Topics covered include: emotional baggage, dealing with difference, establishing limits, avoiding loyalty conflicts, discipline, and power struggles.

Active Parenting Teens

Wednesdays, April 18 - May 30; 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Pre-registration is required.

2-hour sessions over 6 weeks. Please register by April 11.. Cost: $85 per person or $140 per couple (plus $20 for handbook)

Active Parenting Teens is a program which focuses on topics such as: what teens need to succeed; drugs, sexuality, and violence; control versus influence; respect and choice; responsibility and discipline; communication; and power struggles.

Assertive Communication

Wednesdays, April 11 - May 23; 9:00 - 11:30 am. Please register by April 5th

2.5 hour sessions over 6 weeks. Cost: $175 (includes learning materials)

 This program will help you identify the style of communication you use and understand why you use different styles with different people and in different situations. 

You will learn to improve the quality of the messages you send and increase the potential of getting what you want.

You will learn to listen more effectively so that you understand others better.

Caring for Aging Relatives

If you are taking care of an aging parent or relative and would like information and support to help you handle all the responsibilities, this program is for you. 

Avoid the frustrations that can lead to caregiver burnout.  Let us help you through education, support, and information on community resources.

Changing Ways:  Challenging Men Toward Safety & Equality In Their Primary Relationships

Sundays, April 15 to June 24; 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Interested participants must have a one-hour screening session with the facilitator before the program begins. Pre-registration is required 2 weeks before the program starts.

10 weeks; 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Please register by March 31. Cost: $250 (plus the fee for one-on-one session with facilitator)

 This 10-week program involves understanding and developing self-awareness to help prevent oneself from behaving in hurtful and embarrassing ways.

The program focuses on successful ways to interact with friends and coworkers and is particularly helpful with anger issues in the family.

The principles apply to all relationships including those at work. 

Every interested participant will have a one-hour, one-on-one session with the facilitator before the program starts. 

The program is held on Sunday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 pm

The cost is $250 (plus the fee for the one-on-one).

Compassion Fatigue, often referred to as “burnout,” is the bio-psychological fatigue that occurs when a professional helper’s own emotional resources become depleted as a result of intense interactions, over a period of time, with individuals who present with challenging circumstances and behaviours. Compassion Fatigue is an occupational hazard in the helping professions. 

Content of this program will include strategies to identify resources, personally and professionally, to help you cope effectively and continue the important work you do.

Barb Wilkins has a BSW from STU, an MSW from Carleton,a Certificate in Gerontology from STU, and basic level EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) training.  Barb is a member of the National Psychosocial Emergency Response Team, P-SERT which is comprised of Mental Health Professionals across Canada who are trained for deployment in the event of a national disaster.  She is a facilitator in Psychological First Aid.  Barb is a part-time lecturer at STU’s School of Social Work and in the Mi’Kmag/Malisset BSW program.  She contributed to the development of the national curriculum for social work students.  Barb has been in private practice for over 20 years.

Grief Group

Tuesdays, March 27 - May 1; 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Please register by March 20.

Six, 2-hour sessions. Pre-registration is required.. Cost: Free

This is a support/educational program to better understand grief, reconcile ourselves to a loss, learn to nurture ourselves in difficult times, and journey to recovering faith, love and hope.

Healing The Working Wounded

Mondays, March 26 to May 28; 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Pre-registration is required.

Eight 2-hour sessions. Please register by March 15. Cost: $295 (payment plans and subsidies are available)

This program is aimed at individuals who have been bullied at work.  The group will explore the nature of workplace bullying and its impact on those it touches, examine remedial options available, and help participants move to regain control of their lives.

Before the program starts the facilitators will meet with each participant to ensure that the program is appropriate for their needs and to ensure the emotional safety and confidentiality of each person.

Facilitators:  Marilyn Noble, adult educator, and Marvin Claybourn, psychologist.
